You Won’t Be Able to Disable (or Delay) Windows Updates on "Windows 10 Home" Edition
Published June 11, 2015 - Chris Hoffman technology writer, "How-To-Geek contributor".
Microsoft says Windows 10 will be “always up-to-date,” and they mean it. There’s no way to turn Windows Update off. Microsoft says feature updates will be tested on consumer devices before they’re rolled out to business PCs.

Here’s What’s Different About Windows 10 for Windows 8 Users
Published June 10, 2015 - Chris Hoffman technology writer, "How-To-Geek contributor".
Windows 10 isn’t just a big change for Windows 7 users. There have been some major changes in philosophy since Windows 8. Windows 10’s touch interface is now very different and more integrated with the desktop.

Would anyone seriously miss those "legacy" games? I had hoped that Microsoft would at long last ditch the x86 world and go fully 64-bit as it has done with the server OS versions...

Hi AVsonyfan,
I have tried to cling on to 32bit. With these older systems 64bit doesn't seem worth the trade. Though I do keep considering the upgrade.
I notice you have 64bit and 8gb of memory. I'd be interested to know... Do you find 64bit/8gb much quicker? What solution are you using for your eject button? Did you have any issues?
I really like Win7 I can easily do most things and everything just works. I hope Wins10 proves to be as good. Big issue will be finding a suitable Media Centre alternative

Hi Oliver,
If Microsoft could ditch the legacy 32-bit world and make everyone ditch their ancient old hardware, it would make for a far better experience. Just in case they are listening, Microsoft would also help stabilise the OS by binning IE for a new browser such as Edge which is not so tightly integrated into the OS itself as to cause instability and compromise security of their OS. Oh and recompile Media Centre for the glitzy new Windows 10! ;-)
The cure for the lack of Eject button working? Just the trusty right-click, "Eject" option. Apart from that no other issues.
Windows is always more responsive when given more memory to allocate to itself. I think another factor in it feeling quicker is the lack of bloatware from the original installation and I keep the VGX as just media centre PCs, no office or other software. Think I will run Windows 7 for as long as possible, maybe move to 8.1 for extra longevity but not so keen on the interface.
What has happened to the VGX-XL.com site as it seems to have gone AWOL?
Cheers, Darran

What You Need to Know About Upgrading a Windows Vista PC to Windows 10
Published July 6, 2015 - Chris Hoffman technology writer, "How-To-Geek contributor".
Microsoft won’t be offering a free Windows 10 upgrade to any old Windows Vista PCs you might have around. Only Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs get to join the new Windows 10 era for free. But Windows 10 will certainly run on those WIndows Vista PCs. After all, WIndows 7, 8.1, and now 10 are all more lightweight and faster operating systems than Vista is.

The cure for the lack of Eject button working? Just the trusty right-click, "Eject" option. Apart from that no other issues.
That's not such a great option if you primarily use the remote. Dragging out a keyboard/mouse just to eject a disc is not a good experience.
There are a couple of other issues for the VGX-XL running 64-bit. The extra function keys on the Sony keyboard won't work and there aren't any 64-bit audio drivers for the Sigmatel sound card.
For the most part Windows 10 is looking really good. But Microsoft have still made some poor decisions. A prime example is good old Calc. What was a compact lightweight utility has now been replaced with a large, slow to load, bloaty and blurry "Modern" app which is designed for touch use. They could have kept both version but instead calc.exe has been replaced and is now just a launcher for the modern app. Thankfully you can just grab a copy of classic Calc from Windows 7/8 and replace the silly launcher.

It is nice to see the "Windows Annoyances" theme continues on even the latest attempt, sorry version :-)
I really do wonder about the ridiculous security flaw namely "Wi-Fi Sense", I mean what were they thinking of adding this 'feature' which only serves to undermine network security for the questionable sake of convenience. If you can I would turn this off immediately and setup a guest network along with enabling MAC filtering...

Something else rather nasty has come to light about the activation of the free upgrade licence.
If you change your hardware significantly Windows will deactivate, your key will be blocked and you are not given a telephone activation option. This has even happened to people who have just upgraded their BIOS!
The only way to get this Windows 10 installation working again is to buy a new retail key.
The alternative is to wipe the disk, re-install Windows 7/8 with your retail key, go through telephone activation to unblock your key, then take the free Windows 10 upgrade again. Quite an ordeal for a BIOS upgrade! Also bare in mind that this method will only work whilst the free offer is on.

I have updated to Win10 now and find it pretty good, everything works pretty well and mostly seemless.
The only issues I've encountered are..
1. Boot screen freeze reoccurred, but is easily fix as documented on VGX-XLpedia.
2. Eject button stopped working, I've not bothered trying the fix yet and maybe never will, I rarely use discs in favour of USB drives and sticks. For the few occasions each year I do use discs I'll just use the software eject.
3. No media centre as we all know, however I have installed Kodi which is really good, I can stream through it and have it sorting digital content from my hard drives into to neat sections, it even seamlessly puts art work to my video collections. I didn't bother watching TV through my VGX-XL as I always had problems with the epg and tuning in/sorting channels. So I don't miss media centre at all now I'm used to Kodi.
4. For some reason my desktop icons seem to resize themselves differently nearly each time I start up scattering them, this is slightly annoying, they is probably an easy fix, but I've not tried yet.
I really like Wins10 and took to it almost straight away, much better than Win8 and I even slightly prefer it to Win7
