For years man? has wondered who is the fastest, biggest, strongest and how fast can we go. We at VGX-XLforum ask the question, how powerful can we make a VGX-XL, just how fast can they go? Have you upgraded your VGX-XL? Do you think you have the fastest? Enter your set up, let see who has managed to push these system to the most. What is allowed- Changing all the insides, yes everything inside your case can be changed
- The WiFi Dongle can be changed
- Overclocking
- Any operating system or software can be installed
What is not allowed- Altering the external chassis/case in any way (No holes or cut outs)
- Changing any of the original internal parts to external parts
- Any instability, your system must be as stable as it would have been originally
We have 2 categories - All original functions still working, including eject button on chassis, volume/function buttons on original keyboard, all chassis panels including the front audio/video ports
- Some loss of original function, but still must follow the rules above
Ok, let the modding begin Oliver

I'm running a VGX-XL301 with Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit) a Samsung 830 SSD , X3230 PCU, Radeon HD6670 GPU.
My system also runs very stable, it has not crashed in months (since upgrading my GPU).
My machine scores on Windows Experience Index...
CPU: 7.2 Memoery: 7.2 Graphics 7.1 Gaming Graphics 7.1 Primary HD: 7.7
Base Score 7.1
Temps around 45*C - 65*C depending on room temp and system load. BTW my system is very boxed in too, when I move house I will have the room to allow it to breath.
The idea of this thread isn't really about bragging, it's about seeing how far we can push our machines and showing others what performance they can hope to achieve. We might also find out if our machines are bottle necked at any point.

Hi back2mine, You've got some pretty good specs there, a year ago no one would have believed such specs where possible. An overall windows index of 7.2 is the best I have seen and slightly higher than mine at 7.1. It seems my GPU slightly lets me down, its pretty new though, so I'll just make do My SSD seems to performs better than yours, mine actually dropped to 6.7 when it became full, you need to keep a certain amount of space clear for SSDs to performs at their top level, try deleting some things and see if the performance improves? It looks like the ultimate goal would to get a a P5BW-MB motherboard running the following... CPU: (X3230/Q6700) Score: 7.2 Memory (4GB+) Score: 7.2 Graphics (HD7750): 7.4 Gaming Graphics (HD7750): 7.4 Primary HD(Samsung SSD 830): 7.7 I wonder if these specs could be improved upon further, or are our systems bottle necked at this level? If anyone has beaten any of these scores I'd love to hear from you, just join in the debate below. Thanks

Well I'm underwhelmed so far. I thought I'd be pimpin' by now but have had some less than stellar results. So far I've done the chipset driver update, which allowed me to update my BIOS. Then I added a Q6700 and a Radeon 7750. I also added some RAM. I went from a 5.1 to a 5.2 overall. Graphics stayed the same at 5.9, I expected some improvement over the stock video card there. Processor went from 5.1 to 5.9 which was good. Gaming graphics also went up. The odd thing was that the memory score went from 5.5 DOWN to 5.2. So now memory is my limiting factor, all the other sub-scores are now 5.9. Not sure what happened there, I got 2x2GB from Crucial and the system recognized 6GB (I know it's not all addressed in a 32-bit system). I also tried just using the 2x2GB and the system wouldn't even boot. I'm back with the stock 2x1GB for now, and the memory sub-score stayed at 5.2. Any ideas? I may try adding 2x1GB so I'd have 4x1GB and see what effect, if any, that has.

Update - I did manage to get the system to boot with the 2x2GB RAM installed. Still showing a 5.2 for memory while I started out with 5.5 Do I need to upgrade to Win7 to get the memory, or any other, sub-scores, elevated? Thanks for any feedback!

Hi Frank,
Your scores are very disappointing, I wouldn't have though Windows 7 would make such a difference I think something might be wrong with your system. My Hard drive (SSD) result deteriated a lot over time, it turned out the HD was nearly full and this affects the score, once I deleted a few items it was back up to it's usual score/speed. I wonder if your memory could be faulty? You could try a memory testing utility like memtest (I think its called). You could also try cleaning up your system, checking for virus/malware or just simply reinstalling the OS.
You should get better results, so keep trying to fix/tweak your system.
Good luck and let us know if you manage to solve this, cheers

Frank, Is your memory installed in Dual channel configuration? If not, that could be why your memory score has dropped. As for the rest of your scores, 5.9 is the highest achievable score within windows vista. I recommend downloading a benchmark tool and compare those scores with others that have similar upgrades to get a better idea of your actual performance.
SSD performance drops are normal when they fill up, some models worse than others. My intel 520 120Gb starts to drop at about 80% capacity
An interesting side note, my Intel 4930K six-core CPU scores a 7.8 stock and when overclocked to 4.6Ghz still cannot break into the 7.9. also my sapphire HD7750 GPU scores 7.5, I wonder if that has something to do with it running in a Gen3 PCIe slot?

Thanks Oliver and sinful for the feedback!
I did run memtest and found no issues there. I did a complete c: re-install from factory disks and added all the SPs/updates as well.
The memory is dual-channel, I'm using 2x2GB in slots XMM1 and XMM3 as advised on this site. Good idea about benchmarking, I will give that a try.
I did not know that Vista could not go above 5.9 - it seems kind of odd that the same processor, for example, would give a higher score in Win7 than in Vista. On the other hand, the Windows Experience scores could reflect how well the OS utilizes the faster processor. So, unless I go to W7, everything is at it's max of 5.9 under Vista except for the memory. I'll keep working on that!

Hi, I just receive de first part of my "trilogy upgrade" RAM-CPU-Graphic Card. First arrival is my 4 stick of 1 Gb DDR2-800 MHz Elpida. I'm currently running with 4 Gb 533 MHz from Kingstom. My Windows 7 index is: CPU = 6.1 (Core 2 Duo E6700) RAM = 6.1 (4 Gb DDR2 533MHz) Graphic = 4.3 (XFX Radeon HD 6450) Gfx game = 6.1 ( idem ) HDD = 7.8
So, I just install my 4 stick of DDR2 800 MHz and... my RAM index is not changing I see that IT-Troll had a 7.2 index with 800 MHz RAM so what ? Is the RAM index is linked with the CPU capacity ?
glad

Hi Glad, Yes your ram performance is limited by the speed of your processor, you will see it increase with the new CPU in place

It might be worth verifying that it is running at 800MHz. CPU-Z will do this for you. On one tab it will show you the speed settings which are embedded into the modules and on another tab it will show what speed your memory is currently running at.

Just received and installed my Xeon X3230. Everything was changing in 30 minutes. Turn on the Vaio and refresh Windows 7 index. New CPU index rise to 7.2 AND my RAM index rise also to 7.2. So RAM index is well depending of the CPU speed. Really appreciate this big upgrade thanks Mr Big BIOS Team works!
No I'm gonna wait a little to see if the GTX750 Ti will be release in a thin low profile version!
