Well my X3230 has arrived and I have swapped out the Q6700 that was in my VGX-XL202.
As predicted, the WEI scores have stayed the same, at:
Processor: 7.2 Memory: 7.2 Graphics: 7.4 Gaming Graphics 7.4 Primary Hard Disk 7.7
Base score 7.2
HiWinFO32 reports a subtle increase in speed and temps are staying at c. 50C, drawing 1.17 to 1.2 volts.
I will log and report temps (in comparison with the Q6700) when I get a bit more time.

Thanks for giving us your feedback Woody, a lot of people consider both processors prior to purchase, this thread will really help them to make a more informed choice.

It would be good if you do a comparison of the temperatures and volts at 100% CPU utilisation.

It would be good if you do a comparison of the temperatures and volts at 100% CPU utilisation. I did this last night for the X3230, all 4 cores running at between 95 to 100% encoding video for a 2 hour period. Temps never rose above 68 C, were usually around 65 C.. ...the voltage rose to a maximum of 1.28 V. Really happy with this as I think this is well within safety margins Ambient room temp was c 16 C.

There doesn't really seem to be that much difference, I would say the X3230 runs a fraction hotter, but in the grand scheme of things I doubt these temperatures differences are actually statistically significant. It seems that the Xeon runs a tiny bit faster and has a similar thermal profile to that of the Core 2 Quads.. ..there really isn't much between them, indeed I think the performance differences are only really seen based on the results of monitoring programs.. ..in real life not sure it is easy to tell them apart.

It is interesting. It is possible to wind up this system to the new generation of machines:
I have a Dell i7 für Work and this machine is almost the same like your tuned vaio's
CPU: i7 -3770 3.4 GHz 7,7 RAM: 4 GB 7,7 Graphic: Geforce GT640 7,1 HD: HDD 5,9
Total: 5.9
Is this right that a tunded VGX-XL goes almost as fast as a i7 Desktop PC?

No I don't think so, as I understand it, the Wins7 WEI scores do not always give an accurate reflection. Unfortunately a i7 Desktop PC would always wipe the floor with a tuned up VGX-XL. Well unless you do what sinful did and completely gut the VGX-XL then mod the case to fit modern motherboards and power supplies.. sites.google.com/site/vaioxlgroup/tutorials/vgx-xl-redux-project-by-sinfulYou might not (easily) be able to turn a VGX-XL into a powerful desktop but you can upgrade it into a very respectable and modern media centre.

So, my current score is 0.0.... but then again I just got my VGX-XL3 used with no hard drives. Have drives in it and ready to go for building it from the restore CD. This thread is great to know that there is some room to improve upon this computer to give it a home in my main home theater setup. Lots of questions, but I have lots of content to read!
