Like many others, I presume, I had an e-mail this morning in my Hotmail account from Microsoft.. ..hinting that the free upgrade release to Windows 10 will soon be starting (rumoured to be late July). I am quite looking forward to seeing the final version and will subsequently do a review on my blog if anyone is interested.. ..fingers crossed they have at least kept Media Center!

I have quite a few unused Vista Ultimate licence keys, so I am hoping there is a nice upgrade offer for these.
I have seen details of how to hack even the latest build of Windows 10 so that it will install Media Center. Everything in MC works fine but the O/S is then excluded from any future major upgrades. So it would seem that technically there is no reason why they couldn't allow it. It would just continue to work without any effort on their part.
I'm afraid there is little hope of a new or enhanced version though. We would have had some leaked screenshots by now.

I also have some Vista keys but from what I have heard the free upgrade offer will only be for 7 and up.

Hi Sinful,
Yes, from what I understand that is correct, the free offer is only for Win 7 and above.

I don't expect it would be free. But I am hoping there will be a decent introductory offer to entice people to upgrade.
Currently it costs the same to upgrade to Windows 8 from Vista or 7. It would seem a bit mean to charge Vista users full whack for Windows 10 whilst it is free for Windows 7. However it would also seem a bit mean to actively block Media Center in Windows 10...

I wonder how this free upgrade is going to pan out. If I upgrade, then a year down the road I need to reformat, will I then have to buy the upgrade or will they also provide a product key with that free upgrade?
Personly, I'm a bit weary of this need of microsoft to develope one operating system for all types of devices. I'm also starting to miss the freedoms of installing anything I want regardless of how well it might work. If I wanted to be restricted in my use, I would buy a Mac.

If I upgrade, then a year down the road I need to reformat, will I then have to buy the upgrade or will they also provide a product key with that free upgrade? This is something to be wary of as Microsoft have previous form in this area. With Windows 8 Pro there was the limited time offer of a free Media Center key. This had a time-limited activation though and people who have subsequently re-installed and then tried to use the key have found that it will not activate. For Media Center people just repurchase a new key as it is only £7 and the hassle free option. However if a new Windows key is going to £150 or if an ongoing subscription is the only option at that stage, then that is a different matter.

Well I missed all of the FREE upgrade to windows 10. Anyone know the easiest cheapest way to do so? Has all of the original functioning under Vista been figured out for Windows 10, or do I need to buy all new Blu-Ray recorder and other software?

You can still get a free Windows 10 upgrade if you use assistive technologies. So, if you've ever run Magnifier I am sure that counts... www.microsoft.com/en-gb/accessibility/windows10upgradeWindows 10 is available in 32-bit and 64-bit, I believe 32-bit drivers are available for all the hardware. The only problem I recall was with the Sony software used for the Eject button; so this will not work. There is not however a complete driver set for 64-bit so this is best avoided. Windows 10 no longer includes Media Center. There are ways to install it, but it will break the next time their is a major update and so is not worth the hassle. If you currently have Media Center and you perform an in place upgrade, you should get a free DVD Player app. Again there are ways to install this when performing a clean install. You don't get any Blu-ray software and I would be surprised if any Vista era software would still work.
