I have just upgraded to Windows 10. The main problem I have is that the restart freezes on the vaio logo. I can only get PC to restart by pressing the on/ off button on the front of machine. I had to use this method during the install every time Windows needed to restart. Is there a software solution available for this ?.

Yeah this is standard behaviour with the upgrade. Both the FireWire fixes work

Hi I followed your instructions to cure the boot up freeze, but the 1394 OHCI Compliant host controller legacy was a absent from my PC the other two drivers were present ,but upgrading both of these did not cure the freeze. How can I restore this driver without having to pay for it. I did a brief search and was unable to find a free download.

The download link for the driver is on the bottom of the page I linked.
Do you actually use FireWire? If not the simplest solution is just to disable it in BIOS. No need to mess with drivers then.

Hi
I upgraded my XL-301 to Windows 7 in April. I used the fixes on this site to cure the restart freeze and lack of DVD player eject button.
This week I accepted Microsoft's offer of a free upgrade to Windows 10. As described, the unit froze during the various restarts. Pressing the on/off button twice rebooted the unit each time and the upgrade seems to be a success. (32 bit)
While, the volume control on the Sony keyboard works, the DVD eject button does not.
Following, the above link fixed the restart problem.
I then downloaded the Sony Utilities, uninstalled the elements carried over in the upgrade and reinstalled them as described in the tutorial. (note that the link on this site no longer works)
The eject button still does not work! However, I can eject the DVD by right clicking the drive in Explorer and selecting eject.
In the upgrade, as expected, Windows Media Centre was removed. Windows DVD player was installed. On inserting a disc, the player is fired up, but is then non-responsive saying there is no disc loaded.
Using Videolan, the disc plays.
I wonder if there is a problem with the DVD drive driver in Windows 10 and the Sony device.
Any ideas would be welcome.
Cheers

Hi again UPDATE I googled prolems with Windows 10 DVD player last night and came up with this thread: answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/apps_windows_10-windvd/an-update-on-the-windows-dvd-player-app/cfbd06c2-e7fa-488b-8119-633914b05fef?page=1Anyway, the gist of it, is that there is an issue with the AMD display driver. I am using 15.201.1151.0 dated 22/8/15 for my HD 5450. I checked my Win 10 desktop computer this morning, which has a AMD HD5700 card and uses the same driver. It has the same problem with Windows DVD player as my XL-301!!! When I checked UPDATES on my desktop today, there is a new Windows 10 build available; 10586 (previously 10240 was installed). I have upgraded to this, and lo and behold the DVD player is working. Tomorrow, I shall upgrade my XL-301 to this new build and see if it fixes the problem there too. You never know, it might fix the eject button issue. Cheers for now By the way, audio cds happily play on my XL-301 using Windows Media Player. This is the new link to the eject button tutorial; sites.google.com/site/vaioxlgroup/tutorials/eject-button-volume-keys-fix

Hi
Why is nothing easy!
When I checked my XL-301 this morning, there was no update available to build 10586 of Windows 10. My machine was up to date.
Apparently, you cannot update the installation within 31 days of upgrading to Windows 10 from 7 or 8/8.1. This is so you can revert, if you wish.
There is a work around, using the built in DISK CLEANUP application (cleanmgr.exe). One then removes "Previous Windows installations".
Check for updates again and that for version 1511 (build 10586) should be there.
So I have now got my Media Center running version 1511. I had to refix the restart problem again, by installing the legacy driver for the 1394 controller.
Yes, Windows DVD player now works. (note it does not export 5.1 on my machine, unlike VLC)
The keyboard volume controls still work, but not the EJECT BUTTON, which I really would like to work.
Note that this new version of Windows 10 is available as an iso file for a clean install. One can then activate at no cost, using a valid Windows 7 or 8/8.1 key.
Hopefully one of you bright guys will come up with an eject button fix.
Cheers
