Hello. My name is Andi and i am from Switzerland. After a long time searching i bought a VGX-XL 302 from a selling platform like ebay. I love the look of this machine not like a computer more like a Hi-Fi device. One of the reasons that i want the Vaio ist this site, where i found a lot of tips to upgrade and rebuild.
My machine will be the following:
Prozessor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 / 2.13 GHz
RAM:4 GB
HD : 2.5TB (1x 1.5TB & 1x 1TB)
Laufwerk: Bluraydisc
Grafik-Controller: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GTL
Videospeicher:256 MB GDDR3 SDRAM
TV-Karte: FireDTV – FloppyDTV C/CI
Betriebssystem: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit
I think it is very good equipped, plus there are 2 remote control and 2 keyboards, one of them brandnew :-)
So it wait the delivery of the machine and i will write more about.
Greets and thanks for the work in this site

Hi Andi/ firefly, Welcome to the community mate. The XL302 is a great machine, I hope you enjoy it. If you are to make any upgrades you should consider a new graphics card, your machine still has the original card it shipped with, these cards are around 10 years old now and will likely be near the end of its life, modern cards are much improved, and better for 1080p playback. Thanks for joining, Oliver

Hello Oliver
Thank you for your welcome and your tips for upgrade. I think this old baby will need some work for the new world.
Do you have any suggest for newer graphic cards? The recommend on this site are all a bit old. Will the 302 play 1080p with only a graphic card update or need a new CPU?

It will play 1080p with a new graphics card. Here is the best thread to discuss new graphics cards.. vgx-xl.proboards.com/thread/280/graphics-card-options?page=3&scrollTo=2260Graphics cards are an expensive though worthwhile upgrade, the BIOS mod and new CPU can be a cheap upgrade, if your wanting to upgrade you may as well keep going I have SSD, X3230 CPU, 4gb and HD6670 it played anything I threw at it, even 1080p 3D until my 6670 started playing up. I'm waiting for the next gen of low profile graphics cards before I upgrade it though.

Thank you for your tips. I know it is necessary to update the bios i^m a little bit afraid to crash the whole machine.
After that i will make a clean install of win 7. I there someting to take care, maybey Vaio Programs or drivers missing? There is a lot of not used things on the HD and, when noting is in use the CPU is working 50%. Is that normal?

After installing Wins7 or above you will have two issues.. 1. Your eject button will not work, this is because you have missing drivers. You can fix this by following this guide... sites.google.com/site/vaioxlgroup/tutorials/eject-button-volume-keys-fix2. Your VGX-XL will freeze after each restart, this is because the FireWire driver has been updated which causes an issue with VGX-XLs, you can safely disable the FireWire in the BIOS or if you need that FireWire port you can revert the driver back to the original and everything will as it did originally... sites.google.com/site/vaioxlgroup/tutorials/fix-windows-7-boot-screen-issueThe BIOS update is straight forward and the instructions are clear, the scary part is while it flashes the BIOS which take less than a minute but if for some reason your power fails your in trouble. Don't flash the BIOS during a lightning storm or if utility companies are digging up the ground near your house. Not sure about the CPU thing, but I do know a clean install of Windows uses less of your VAIO's resources than the original factory software
