Hello all! I am trying to get rid of a Sony VAIO VGX-XL3 (PCV-H41L). I still have the remote and keyboard it came with. The only problem is that it is likely that the RAM and CPU need to be replaced. This was based on a local PC repair shop's assessment.
IT STILL BOOTS! It can get to the Windows desktop but after awhile it will start to have graphical issues. Rather than sell this thing, I really just want to give it away to someone that wants it. I live in Southern Orange County, California. If you can do local pickup, that would be great! Otherwise, you'll have to send me some funds for shipping. I am willing to help get it to you! Please contact me if you are interested! Garrett (949)-397-0225 Pictures:
I wonder if this could be a graphics card issue? Many people on this forum have upgraded their graphics cards, ram and cpu (the latter requires a bios upgrade). Changing those 3 parts along with a SSD drive can really speed up VGX XL systems and make them more capable at doing today's tasks (like 4k video playback, quick boot and multitasking) If you can source cheap parts it could be a fun project for you. There's guides with how to videos (albeit a little dated) to all the upgrades on our sister site VGX-XL.com

I was not able to load "VGX-XL.com" I'm also not very aware of everything this system can do and I'm not sure how valuable it is. I see alot of composite and component inputs/outputs though. Might be good for retro games to output to a CRT? What can I do with this thing compared to... just building a PC with modern parts to be a HTPC? If there is another way to access those guides you're referring to, I might be interested in fixing it up. Also, it is weird the shop that took a look at it said its the RAM and CPU and not the display card.

Here is the link to VGX-XLpedia sites.google.com/site/vaioxlgroup/A VGX XL can't really do anything a modern home built htpc can do, but the benefits of doing up a VGX XL are 1. They are retro 2. They are arguably more stylish than most/any custom build 3. Probably cheaper than building a full htpc as A second hand imoroved CPU can be found cheap, SSD drives are cheap nowadays, older ram be found for very cheap the most expensive part is probably the graphics card, but a 4k low profile budget card shouldn't be too expensive and you'd need to buy a graphics card if you custom build a new htpc anyway. 4. The case is very good at keeping the htpc quiet. Fixing up a VGX XL isn't for everyone, they have certain challenges but can be a fun project. If you got time, and ideally have spare pc parts knocking around, it could be with it. As for what is wrong with the VGX XL, I obviously haven't seen it. It sounds like a graphics card issue. I suppose the guy in the repair shop was guessing either CPU or Ram, as I don't see why both of these would fail together? I guess my point is that many people with a VGX XL would look to upgrade the ram, cpu and graphics card anyway, so probably wouldn't be too bothered even if all three of these didn't work.
