I have just ordered a 4k UHD HDR TV on Amazon for a good price through a 'deal of the day' offer. So looks like I'll be needing a graphics card. I want one with can play 4k obviously, but also supports HEVC, HDMI2.0, HDCP2.2, HDR and is a good spec for a media centre ie quiet, low power, HDMI2.0 and maybe HDCP2.2. Prepare to pay from £80 upto £160. I don't play games. I thinking the GTX960 is the best option for me at the moment, anyone got any suggestions though? Noob question, does the 960 support HDR or would any 4K capable card be able to handle HDR? <<edit>>Been reading up on the RX 480, it definitely lists HDR as a spec, along with HDMI2.0, HDCP2.2 and HEVC, sounds like the perfect card until I read the price, £219 is the cheapest I've found one for on Amazon, so more than I wanted to pay, but not excessively, perhaps with it being a new release it might come down in value a little, one can hope.<</edit>> <<edit2>>looks like AMD are about to release RX460 and RX470 cards, I think I should hang on to see what these cards will be like.. www.mobipicker.com/rx-490-rx-470-rx-460-details-know/ <</edit2>> Cheers

For HDR you need DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMi 2.0b. Only the latest high-end cards from AMD and Nvidia have these and as such are overkill for HTPC use. The RX480 and RX470 are also reportedly rather noisy with a blower style cooler. The Nvidia GTX 950 is the closest in spec for your budget but this does not have HDR capable ports. There are compact, low-power models which have a semi-passive fan; e.g. www.zotac.com/us/product/graphics_card/geforce®-gtx-950-low-power-0#specIt could be some time before there are any mid-range cards available with HDR. The RX460 is hopeful, but often cards in this segment are reworkings of cards from the previous generation and so don't get all the latest goodies.

I've been finding it difficult to find much UHD, 4k (whatever you wanna call it) content. 1080p is still as good as it gets for many of my favourite shows like, Walking Dead and Game Of Thrones so I realise I can wait a little longer for a new card. I do see a difference using my media centre through this new TV, text is much sharper and it upscales content reasonably well. So I feel it's still been worth the upgrade. There's a few new cards coming into the market that I'm interested in, but I want to wait until the partner editions come out as they'll likly be cheaper and have betterquieter/ cooling fans. The RX 470 4gb looks to be a great performer for the estimated/leaked price. The RX 460 will be low powered and not require any power supply input, drawing all power from the PCI slot. I wonder if a partner might produce a low profile version that might work in the VGX-XL range? We can hope. Also a new Nvidia GTX 1060 is coming out and looks very interesting but I think it will be released at over £200 so a little out of my price range. There's certainly some interesting cards coming out, I'll be keeping a close eye on things.

That is still the problem with 4K. Even big budget movies which are filmed in 4K are often finalised in 2K. The cost of producing SFX and post processing at 4K is just too high and too time consuming. So they do this in 2K and then upsample back to 4K which is crazy. There are actually very few things which are 4K end-to-end.
The RX460 does look interesting though. However I think the RX470 will be too noisy and power hungry for HTPC use.

AMD have now officially announced the RX460 confirming that it will have DisplayPort 1.4 (no word on HDMI yet). The updated slide shows the reference cooler.

AMD have now officially announced the RX460 confirming that it will have DisplayPort 1.4 (no word on HDMI yet). The updated slide shows the reference cooler. View AttachmentLooks promising. HDR, display port 1.4, 4k 264/HEVC this could be an excellent media centre card. Be great if a low profile version is released for VGX-XL owners. Amazon have the Nvidia GT 970 coming on Deal of the Day for prime users later today. I'm watching it, to see how much they reduce it. I guess with the new better value cards being released is need to have a heavy reduction.

The 970 came on at £209. I think I'll wait for the new cards to come out.

The AMD RX460 is now available to buy starting at £100. Some manufacturers are stating they have HDMI 2.0b. I like the look of the Gigabyte Windforce 2GB (£120) which has a semi-passive cooler.

Nvidia's answer to this will be the GTX 1050. Currently rumoured for release in October.

Reviews are now out for the GTX 1050 (£115) and GTX 1050 Ti (£139). These include all the goodies required for 60Hz 4K HDR content in a bus powered card. Guru3D ReviewHowever the smallest cards are currently full height, double width, short length and so not a good option for the VGX. There are however still rumors of a low power 1050 SE / 1040 card to come...

AFAIK there is still nothing small enough that can be used as a straight swap-in part.

Single slot, but still full height. Close but no cigar.

Single slot, but still full height. Close but no cigar. Oh yeah, I was thrown by the mini itx part. Should have known it was too good to be true 😢 Maybe one day

Rumours of a Nvidia GT 1030 (GP108) started to spread yesterday after it made an appearance in an AIDA64 update. If it is indeed based on Pascal architecture it should have all the features required for a modern HTPC; 4K, 8K, HEVC, HDR, DP 1.4, HDMI 2.0b, HDCP 2.2
This should have similar, or even lower, power and cooling requirements as the GT 730. So should come in low profile and passively cooled form factors.
Rumoured to go on sale 17th May.

Exciting news. A modern HTPC suitable single low profile card would really help breath life into the vgx-xl series. Fingers crossed
