Hi Jamie,
There are pros and cons to Wins32/64 bit versions. 64bit can use recognise to a Max of 8GB 667mhz RAM or 4GB of 800mhz RAM whilst 32bit can only recognise up around 3.25-3.5GB of 4GB 800mhz RAM'usable'. However none of the original Sony drivers are made for 64bit Windows so you would not be able to use some of the original keyboard keys or the physical eject button on your VGX-XL the eject issue can be bodged with a software eject on the desktop or by hardwiring the button (don't know anyone who's done this on a VGX-XL yet) and if you replace the original keyboard the button issue will no longer matter (some keyboards you can programs a button solely for ejection) Most users here seem to go down the 32bit route mainly due to the original driver compatibility, you could also set up dual boot and have best of both worlds.
Plenty to think about here

Hi forper and welcome to the forum The discs are available to all members with 4 or more posts. We have the XL100 discs available and they are a direct image from the original Sony Discs.

forper are you sure you want the original discs, they are XP. A clean Win7 or Win10 install might be a better choice, plus your XL100 might not be to the original spec which my conflict when installing the original factory discs.

Hi Oliver, Thanks for your post, I'd prefer to keep everything original. I have a Win 7 laptop but my XL100 will just be for connection to my TV and playback of video files of stuff that's really hard/impossible to get on DVD/laserdisc..I'm not expecting it to be a gaming PC or even online or anything. I have a pirated copy of Win XP on it now and I AM having trouble getting everything to function after downloading individual drivers from Sony UK and a few other spots. Re: my trouble with component video: vgx-xl.proboards.com/thread/370/component-video-output-vgx-xl100The previous owner of my XL100 may have done hardware mods but I'm not confident enough yet to open it up. Can I ask you do the VAIO recovery discs contain the complete Windows XP: MCE? Would I just need the product key number off the sticker on the back of my unit to activate it? Thanks again...1 post to go!

Yeah you will need the licence key from the back. You could try running software to determine your hardware, that way to can find the exact drivers

Hi, We are looking for recovery disks to add to our downloads section. We currently have Disks for the VGX-XL100, VGX-XL2, VGX-XL201, VGX-XL301 & VGX-XL302. Maybe you can help us with finding the the other 4 pairs of disks VGX-XL1, VGX-XL202, VGX-XL3? Anyone who can help, please upload the Disks to a online storage site, like Dropbox, Google Drive or similar and provide me, Oliver with the links, once verified I will add the recovery disks to the list. The main reason to do this is to help your fellow VGX-XL enthusiasts, but I will promote any member providing such material with V.I.P status and credit will be given. Oliver,
I have VGX-XL1 recovery disks available for posting. I need VGX-XL3 recovery disks. Are there any available?

Hi Smoother and Welcome to the forums,
Unfortunately we don't have the VGX-XL3 discs, the US model recovery disks are harder to find as we seem to have more European members. Most of us have upgraded to Win7 or higher, not many are still using XP/Vista, the disk downloads are all in the Members area which is available to all members with 4 or more posts, your welcome to search and help yourself the disks but like I said we don't have the XL3 disks. If you can't get the XL3 disks it might be best to install a clean newer version of Windows, however some people prefer to go retro. Now you've shown an interest perhaps one of our XL3 members will make them available (fingers crossed). Anyhow enjoy the forum, and if you can upload the XL1 disks I'm sure someone will find them useful.

One question! You must have also the original partition, so the recovery disks work?

One question! You must have also the original partition, so the recovery disks work? No, the partition is only to burn the disks from. As long as you have a copy of the recovery disks they should work just fine with our without the partition.

I think I have a recovery disk stuck in the dvd-player. When I get to taking it apart I'll confirm and pull an image if it's not up here.

We do need the VGX-XL1 recovery discs but I think 2 discs are needed for the complete recovery. The eject button should work whilst the BIOS splash screen is loading also opening up the VAIO should enable you to reach an internal eject button for the drive.
